Directions:  From Interstate 85 in Salisbury, Exit 76B (Innes Street) toward downtown approximately 1 mile then left on Church Street at the Confederate Monument, travel 2 blocks then right on Bank Street, in the heart of Salisbury's National Register Historic District

The Andrew Murphy House at 229 West Bank Street is located in the West Square Historic District of Salisbury, North Carolina, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  The Greek Revival house with double portico was built in 1854 by the wealthy young merchant Andrew Murphy for his bride, Hellen Webb Long.  Hellen was the daughter of Alexander Long, a prominent Salisbury surgeon and personal friend of Andrew Jackson.  The Dr. Alexander Long house still stands in Salisbury and many of the objects in the Andrew Murphy House were inherited from Dr. Long.

The same family has occupied the house for five generations.  The builder's the youngest of ten children, Walter "Pete" Murphy, inherited the property.  He was a well-known North Carolinian and veteran legislator who served during nineteen sessions of the state House of Representatives.  He was elected twice to the speakership.  Walter Murphy married Maude May Horney of Jamestown in 1903 and they had two children; Spencer Murphy, born in 1904 and Elisabeth Murphy, born 1907.  Spencer, who later inherited the house, was the editor of the Salisbury Post for twenty-eight years.  He married Katherine DeBerry Fisher and their one child, Mary Marshall Murphy, inherited the home.  Mary Marshall Murphy married Seth Speight Murdoch, who was Rowan County manager for nineteen years.  Their daughter Katherine DeBerry Murdoch, is the present owner and is offering many of the original furnishings and decorative objects at public auction.  These items have never been offered before and there have been no additions to this important estate.
